Traffic Signage Information

Traffic Signage Guide

Alabama motorists must follow a strict set of rules and regulations while operating a vehicle on the roads and highways throughout the state. In order to ensure the safety of all drivers and passenger occupants, Alabama residents are expected to understand and follow the rules of the road. One of the first steps in doing so involves a thorough understanding of traffic signs located on the streets, highways, intersections, 4-way stops, and any other public roads.

Failure to follow traffic signs has led to a countless number of motor vehicle collisions throughout the United States. Those motorists with a comprehensive knowledge regarding traffic signs are placed in the best position to avoid a potential traffic crash. Maintaining a current knowledge of this signage will play a significant role in increasing the safety levels on all roads in Alabama. Generally speaking, the three types of traffic signs are regulatory, warning, and guide signs. We outline these three categories below to give drivers a full sense of the most important traffic signs.

With a focus on our “attorneys helping people” mantra, Citrin Law Firm is constantly seeking to improve the safety of Alabama’s roads. Regulatory Signs

As indicated by the name, regulatory signs serve to provide regulation on Alabama’s roads. By law, these regulatory signs must be obeyed at all times. Those who fail to adhere to these signs may be subject to a written citation from law enforcement. The most common regulatory signs include but are not limited to:

  • Yield signs
  • Parking signs
  • Stop signs
  • Speed limit signs
  • Movement signs (one way street indicators, “Keep Right”, merge, road closures, etc.)

Warning Signs

Often displayed as an orange or yellow sign with black writing, warning signs serve to designate certain areas of road travel. The following are some common warning signs:

  • No passing zones
  • School zones
  • Railroad crossings
  • Road condition warning signs
  • Construction signs
  • Guide Signs

Guide signs serve to help drivers to navigate the roads with ease and assist in denoting some of the more common areas where one would stop. Guide signs typically provide information for drivers regarding food, gas, lodging, rest areas, hospitals, etc. The following colors serve as guide for what type of information is displayed:

  • Green: highway and route information
  • Blue: gas, hospitals, food, lodging, and other motorists services
  • Brown: recreational activities

Traffic Lights

Alabama residents are well aware of the importance of traffic lights. These traffic signs serve to direct traffic and keep the roads as safe as possible. The following are the four different types of traffic lights used today:

  • Progressive Lights Serve to keep all traffic moving at the correct speed.
  • Traffic Activated Lights These lights change based upon traffic loads. When no traffic is present, the light will not turn green. When heavy traffic is present, the light will remain green for a longer period of time. Traffic activated lights serve to predict congested intersections and keep the flow of traffic at optimal levels.
  • Timed Lights These are the least costly types of traffic lights, often used in smaller communities throughout Alabama. In these cases, the light is set to remain green for a preset period of time.
  • Pedestrian Activated Lights Often seen in busy crossing intersections, these lights are activated by a pedestrian pressing the button which indicates that they need to cross the road.
