A Retired Veteran Finds Hope After a Crash

A Cruise in a Classic Pickup Spirals into a Nightmare on the Road

After 30 years of honorable military service, Carlton was looking forward to a quiet, retired civilian life in Alabama with his family. One of his favorite pastimes was driving his lovingly restored classic truck — a powder blue 1955 Chevy pickup.

Unfortunately, an impatient driver changed his retirement forever. It was a sunny, warm Alabama morning, and Carlton was out running errands in his truck. He was passing through an intersection when, seemingly out of nowhere, an SUV turned left in front of him. The driver didn’t have the right of way; she was just trying to beat Carlton through the light.

Carlton, who was going the speed limit, didn’t have time to avoid a collision. His truck violently struck the side of the other driver’s SUV, and his truck rolled into the ditch.

During the collision, Carlton’s head struck the side of his truck, and he lost consciousness. The accident was so forceful that the Chevy’s dashboard crumpled, pinning him inside the pickup. When he awoke, he was bloodied and sore, but thankful to be alive.

Carlton’s “Bumps and Bruises” Turn Out to Be More Serious Than He Thought

Initially, Carlton thought that he’d been miraculous spared during the crash. Nonetheless, he made the wise decision to go to an urgent care clinic that day, to get his cuts cleaned and stitched up. However, the urgent care doctors were very concerned about his lacerations and cuts, pain levels, and reported loss of consciousness. They sent him immediately to the hospital for a CT scan.

His doctors quickly diagnosed a series of injuries

  • Severely broken nose
  • Concussion
  • Lacerations to his face, arms, and legs
  • Chest and rib pain

In the following months, Carlton’s injuries healed slowly – and more complications began to appear.

First, he suffered from degenerative arthritis, and while he lived an active lifestyle before the crash, Carlton’s daily activities were now very challenging. Light physical activity was exhausting; even walking his dogs was too much.

While Carlton took care of himself as best he could, he started noticing pain and swelling in his nose. A fleck of paint from his truck landed in one of the cuts on his nose, causing a severe staph infection. He had to endure several procedures to remove the foreign body from his face, and as a result, Carlton’s nose is permanently scarred.

Emotional Trauma Complicates Carlton’s Life After the Crash

Even months after the accident, Carlton was experiencing severe pain and headaches that wouldn’t go away. The crash also increased Carlton’s anxiety. Even though he was a seasoned combat veteran, light activity and light stress triggered anxious feelings, dizzy spells, and shortness of breath after the crash. What should have been a smooth recovery was becoming a long and difficult process.

Since he experienced so many injuries and complications, Carlton’s medical bills, out-of-pocket costs, and liens began to pile up. It was all just too much. Carlton knew he needed help. That’s when he called Andy Citrin Injury Attorneys.
