Mobile, Alabama holds the honorable distinction of having hosted America’s very first Mardi Gras celebration in 1703, predating New Orleans’ famous festivities by over a decade. Nicholas Langlois was the Frenchman who initiated the celebration.

In 1704 French Soldiers at Fort Louis de La Louisiane formed the first mystic society, Société de Saint Louis. This society marked the beginning of Mobile’s carnival organizations. The first formal Mardi Gras parade in Mobile occurred in 1711, setting a precedent for the grand celebrations that would become a cornerstone of Mobile’s cultural heritage. The festivities have evolved from simple masked balls into elaborate parades and festivals, establishing many traditions that continue today, including the throwing of treats to crowds and the various mystic societies that organize the festivities.

Safety Tips for Your Mardi Gras Celebration

As Mardi Gras season approaches, thousands of visitors and locals alike prepare to experience the magic of America’s original carnival celebration. Enjoying Mobile’s vibrant Mardi Gras celebrations safely means planning ahead for your family’s well-being. Whether you are a first-time reveler or a seasoned parade-goer, following key safety guidelines helps guarantee an enjoyable experience for everyone joining the festivities.

  • Wear comfortable, sturdy shoes suitable for extended standing and walking through crowded areas.
  • Stay hydrated throughout the festivities by carrying water bottles and drinking regularly, especially on warmer parade days.
  • Establish a clear meeting point with your group before the parade begins in case anyone becomes separated during the celebration.
  • Refrain from driving intoxicated

For parents with children:

  • Write your contact information on a card
  • Place the card securely in your child’s pocket or shoes
  • Consider using temporary ID bracelets for younger children
  • Choose designated family viewing areas along the parade route for a more controlled and relaxed experience with enhanced crowd management measures

While the excitement of catching throws from floats is part of the fun, remember to maintain a safe distance. Keep children off of the barricades, and make sure they do not crawl under the barricades as they could get trampled or seriously harmed. Similarly, do not reach under or between barricades. Following these simple precautions helps ensure your Mardi Gras experience remains a joyful celebration of Mobile’s rich cultural tradition.
