How To Prepare For A Hurricane

Storm Weather Home Preparation

Recent projection models show that there is a strong possibility of Tropical Storm Isaac making landfall in Mobile and Baldwin Counties in five days. Some weather analysts predict that the tropical storm will be a hurricane by the time it hits land in the continental United States.

While its final destination is still uncertain, many in Mobile and Baldwin County have begun preparing for the storm.

According to the National Weather Service’s National Hurricane Center, the following tips will ensure that you are prepared for the storm should it make landfall:

  • Clean up any debris or loose objects in the yard. Strong hurricane-force winds can pick up these objects and cause substantial property damage to anything in their path.
  • Re-enforce your garage door. According to FEMA, garage door failures in high winds are one of the major factors in damaged or destroyed homes.
  • Keep a list of emergency contacts for easy reference, including the local emergency management office, county law enforcement, local hospitals and your property insurance agent.
  • Stock up on emergency supplies, including non-perishable food, distilled water, batteries, flashlights, rope, tarps, plastic bags, medication, first aid kits and other essentials to help you through the aftermath of a storm.
  • Select a safe place for your family to weather the storm, whether this is in your home (for example, a windowless room) or an emergency shelter near your home.
  • Develop an emergency plan and ensure that your family, especially younger children, understand what they should do in the event the plan needs to be put into action.
  • Plan for family pets. Many shelters will not accept pets, so it may be a good idea to have an evacuation plan

After a storm, make sure that the roads are declared safe before driving anywhere. Once a storm hits, the last thing you will want to deal with is an auto accident!
