Common Symptoms of a Dislocated Joint

Dislocated joints are serious and sometimes life threatening injuries. When a body part becomes dislocated it will be accompanied by severe pain and loss of function to that body part.  It can also result in stretched or torn ligaments. In many cases, the adrenaline associated with these types of accidents will make it difficult to feel any injuries, even dislocated joints.

Not only does this adrenaline rush block your receptors, but it also clouds the mind leaving accident victims flustered.  After being involved in an automobile accident, all individuals involved must seek immediate medical attention to prevent further complications.

The following are some common symptoms of a dislocated joint that person may notice:

Treatment for Dislocated Joints

Treatment for dislocated joints may vary depending on the joint that has been dislocated and the severity of the dislocation. These treatments can range from ice therapy to immobilization surgery. Once properly treated, most dislocated joints often regain their full function and that person will be able to resume normal activities of daily living.

Some common treatments for dislocated joints include:

Medical professionals will maneuver the body part in order to put the joint back in its correct position. This typically requires a local anesthetic, especially if there is severe pain and swelling.

Typically medical professionals will place the body part in a splint or sling to immobilize the joint for a number of weeks.  The severity of the dislocation will determine how long the splint needs to be worn.

Typically the pain will reduce following the reduction process, however, if the person is still in pain, medical professionals may prescribe muscle relaxers or pain relievers.

If any blood vessels or nerves have been damaged during the injury, surgery may be required. Surgery may also be required if the dislocation cannot be fixed during the reduction process.

Once the splint has been removed and the surgery has been completed, the patient can begin rehabilitation. This is typically performed with physical and occupational therapists to correctly restore the joint to its normal strength and full range of motion.

After the rehabilitation process has been completed, most patients notice they are able to perform the same activities as before the injury.
