Citrin Safety Foundation To Host 5K, Fun Run Oct. 20

The Citrin Safety Foundation began this new school year in high gear, coordinating  presentations of Alive at 25 in area high schools, as well as launching the first annual “Stayin’ Alive” Citrin Safety Foundation 5K Fun Run.

The foundation’s presentation of Alive at 25 was recently given to students at Daphne High School. Alive at 25 is a defensive driving program certified by the National Safety Council. It is especially designed to reach young people, ages 15 through 24. This program is being presented across the country, yielding statistics that are showing dramatic decreases in accidents and fatalities among young people who have taken the course.

The “Stayin’ Alive” Citrin Safety Foundation 5K Fun Run-Walk will take place Oct. 20 at 1703 Main Street in Olde Daphne. The course is certified and awards will be given in all age categories.

“This event is not only for runners, but also an opportunity for families to come out and support the mission of bringing Alive at 25 to our area,” said Pam Winstead, Executive Director of the foundation. “The Fun Run/Walk can certainly be just an enjoyable stroll through the beautiful, shady streets of Olde Daphne.” Food and music will be a part of the event, as well as activities for children, including face painting and a giant inflatable.

“Alive at 25 is being so well received by the high school students we are seeing; they are engaged and attentive during the event, and truly seem to be grasping a new awareness in regard to the serious nature of driving,” said Pam Winstead, Foundation Executive Director.

Andy Citrin founded the non-profit Citrin Safety Foundation in 2010 in memory of 18-year old Braden Scott Bowers of Loxley, after Braden was killed in an automobile accident, caused by a distracted driver. It is the mission of the Citrin Safety Foundation to prevent such tragedies by offering the creative and interactive program to as many young people as possible. To date, the free Alive at 25 program has been presented at Daphne High School, Foley High School, Bayside Academy, Central Christian School, Thomasville High School, Sweetwater High School, Church on the Eastern Shore, and as a community event in Daphne and Pensacola. Future presentations are now being planned at Gulf Shores, Fairhope and Robertsdale High Schools, and for the home schooled students of Mobile and Baldwin County.
