Andy Citrin Team Supports Kids with Fall 2021 Project Backpack

In the state of Alabama, more than one in five children currently live in households below the poverty line. In Mississippi, it’s more than one in four. Right here in our own communities, parents are struggling to provide their kids with the basic tools they need to succeed in school—especially during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

We started Project Backpack during the 2020-21 school year because we saw how many of our local students were in need, and it’s quickly become a real inspiration for our whole team. It’s such an honor and privilege to give back to our fellow community members, and one of the things I’m most proud of in more than 35 years as an attorney.

This fall, we’ve expanded the program to reach even more kids. Read on to find out what our team has been up to recently.

A Memorable Night in Moss Point

We participated in the sixth annual Moss Point Back to School Rally at Jerry D. Alexander Football Stadium. We had a great time meeting so many kids and their parents, seeing so many smiles, talking with many of the other community partners, volunteers, and vendors at the event, and enjoying the school spirit!

The Moss Point School District kids started their school year on August 4. It’s such a great honor for us to have been able to help so many of them prepare for a successful school year and start out on the right foot with many of the basic supplies they’ll need to succeed.

Back to School Week in Mobile, Baldwin, and Montgomery Counties

The week of August 9 was a big one for kids across Alabama just starting their school years. And it was the busiest week yet for our Project Backpack team! We welcomed kids at schools at four separate Mobile, Bay Minette, and Montgomery schools with backpacks full of supplies:

  • August 9: Leinkauf Elementary School in Mobile, AL—400 backpacks donated
  • August 11: Delta Elementary School in Bay Minette, AL—260 backpacks donated
  • August 12: Seth Johnson Elementary School in Montgomery, AL—420 backpacks donated
  • August: 13: Pine Grove Elementary in Bay Minette, AL—425 backpacks donated

The week concluded with a pep rally atmosphere at the Pine Grove Elementary gym. Kids, teachers, and families celebrated with Baldwin County High cheerleaders, Tigerettes dancers, and the Tiger Marching Band.

“This is a shining example of what is great about Baldwin County,” said Eddie Tyler, superintendent of Baldwin County Schools. “We can’t say enough how much we appreciate Mr. Citrin and his team for bringing the program back again this year and for all they are doing to support schools in Baldwin County.”

Project Backpack Is Just Getting Started

Since our first annual drop-off event in January, we’ve given away almost 6,000 backpacks to kids in Mobile, Foley, Pascagoula, Moss Point, Bay Minette, and Montgomery. Our law firm has offices in or near these locations and we’re committed to making sure students have what they need to succeed, just like we’re committed to fighting for injured people and their families.

This is only a starting point, and we have big plans to expand Project Backpack more and more as we do more of these events and learn more about the needs within our communities.

We didn’t get to where we are today by setting modest goals or doing things halfway! Our goal is to keep donating until every child who needs a backpack will get one. We fight and win for our personal injury clients every day, and we bring that same attitude to fighting for our local kids.

Does Your School Need a Project Backpack Event?

Ever since we started Project Backpack, parents from all over Alabama and Mississippi have been asking us if we can come to their kids’ schools. We hear it everywhere we go: “Can we have backpacks, too?” We want to help everyone we can!

If you’re a parent interested in having Project Backpack come to your school, or you’d just like to learn more about the our program and other charitable efforts, please reach out! We have a whole team dedicated to finding every school in need and helping us plan future events, and we’d love to hear from you.
