Causes of Occupant Ejections
There are many safety devices that are intended to ensure that the occupant is not ejected from the car in a violent crash. Sometimes, these devices fail to keep passengers safe and result in a catastrophic occupant ejection accident.
While almost any type of Alabama car accident could lead to the ejection of a passenger, there are certain causes that are more prone to causing this type of accident, including, but not limited to, the following:
- Seatbelt Malfunctions
- Rollover Accidents
- Defective Door Latches
- Weak Side-Window Glass
If any of the contributing factors listed above caused you or a loved one to be ejected from the vehicle in an accident, our attorneys may be able to help you with your claim. Simply complete the Free Case Review form to the right to get started.

Types of Occupant Ejections
There are two types of ejection accidents that occur as a result of a car crash; partial and total ejection accidents:
- Partial Ejection – When the driver or another occupant is thrown forward but their body does not completely leave the vehicle, it is considered a partial ejection accident. Some common examples of partial ejection are when a passenger is stopped by the windshield, windows or seat belt restraints
- Total Ejection – When a passenger is completely thrown from the vehicle upon impact, the accident is considered a total ejection. In addition to the common injuries sustained by occupant ejection victims, those who are totally ejected from the vehicle are at an increased risk of being hit or run over by an oncoming vehicle and will frequently lead to the wrongful death of the passenger.
Occupant Ejection Statistics
Close to 9,000 people are killed every year and another 20,000 are injured in either a partial or total occupant ejection accident, according to SafeRoads.org. More than 200,000 people were killed in these types of accidents over the last quarter century.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), about 28 percent of all fatal injuries suffered in auto accidents involve occupant ejection. Around 75 percent of injured victims who are completely ejected from the car will sustain fatal injuries.

It only takes a second for an accident to occur, but the injuries that result from a collision in which an occupant is ejected from the vehicle can last a lifetime and can often become fatal. No one ever expects to be involved in this type of tragic accident, but if you are involved in one, it is crucial that you consult with an attorney who is well-versed in Alabama law before signing any documents from the insurance company.
Insurance providers are in the business of making money and do not always have an injury victim’s best interests at heart. After an accident, they will often offer injured parties far less compensation than they deserve or require to cover the expenses they incurred from the accident.
