Whole Foods Recalls Ricotta Salad over Listeria Concerns

Whole Foods Market is recalling its Ricotta Salata from stores in 22 states, including Alabama and Florida.

The recall was issued due to concerns over Listeria contamination.

Listeria contamination can turn into listeriosis, a serious disease that has a mortality rate of about 20 percent. Listeriosis can manifest into sepsis and meningitis. Symptoms of listeriosis include fever, muscle aches, diarrhea or other gastrointestinal issues, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions.

Listeria infection can be especially dangerous for pregnant women as the contamination can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery or life-threatening infections in the newborn.

If you or a loved one ate the recalled ricotta cheese and experienced any of these symptoms, you are urged to seek medical attention right away.

The recalled Ricotta Salata Frescolina brand is cut into wedges, packaged in clear plastic wrap. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the cheese was sold with a Whole Foods Market scale label using PLU 293427. All “sell by” dates through Oct. 2 are affected by the recall.

So far, at least one death and fourteen illnesses have been reported. Whole Foods Market stores in the following states are affected by the recall:
