Driving in Fog

Alabama drivers must be prepared to drive in all types of inclement weather, including fog. Fog is cloud of water dewdrops that are suspended above or right at the Earth’s surface. Heavy fog, also known as dense fog, reduces a driver’s visibility of the road. Driving in fog can be dangerous for all motorists on the road. It is not uncommon for severe accidents to occur in dense fog.

If you were involved in a motor vehicle accident while driving in foggy conditions, you may have legal and financial recourse. Contact an Alabama auto accident attorney today to explore your legal options.

Tips for Driving in Fog

Foggy conditions can significantly effect a driver’s perception and visibility. Oftentimes, drivers will misjudge their distances; in particular, they may have trouble distinguishing between fixed objects and moving objects.

Drivers need to exercise caution while driving in fog in order to reach their destination safely. Listed below are driving safety tips for driving in fog:

  • Make sure to use your low beam lights, high beam lights can reflect off the fog and reduce your visibility.
  • Decrease your vehicle’s speed.
  • Check your speedometer regularly. Fog can distort a driver’s perception and make them think that they are traveling slower than they actually are.
  • Do not tailgate. Allow yourself enough room to stop, if a dangerous situation arises.
  • Do not turn on cruise control.
  • Avoid excessively changing lanes.
  • Be on the lookout for parked or slow moving vehicles.
  • Avoid driving in areas where you don’t see any other vehicles.
  • Turn on your hazard lights.
  • Do not attempt to pass traffic, unless it’s necessary. Remember that the other driver’s on the road also have decreased visibility and may fail to see you.
  • Avoid braking suddenly or making sudden, evasive moves. This will reduce your chances of being rear-ended.
  • Allow the road’s markings and edges to guide you.
  • Slightly open your window, so you can hear any upcoming traffic.
  • Use your defrosters and windshield wipers to improve your visibility.
  • In the event that your car stalls, move the vehicle out of traffic, if possible. Make sure you stand away from the stalled vehicle while waiting for help; this will prevent your chances of being hit by oncoming traffic.
  • If possible, avoid driving until the fog clears.

Following these tips will prevent you from being involved in an accident during foggy weather.
