Dental Injuries

July 31, 2014

At the Citrin Law Firm, our Mobile auto accident attorneys have years of experience handling injury claims. Throughout the years, we have seen many serious dental injuries as a result of a car crash. Dental injuries, or temporomandibular joint (TMJ) issues, are commonly sustained by accident victims; however, they are often overlooked, especially when more serious injuries were incurred.

The whiplash effect of a car accident normally injures a person’s neck, but it can also hurt their jaw, face, head or mouth. Serious facial and dental injuries can occur without a direct blow to the head or face; it depends on the position the victim and their jaw were in at the time of impact.

If you or a loved one has suffered a dental injury in an Alabama car accident, you may be entitled to file a claim to pursue compensation for your losses. You may be able to recover current and future medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering and other damages related to the crash.

Types of Dental Injuries

There are two different classifications for dental injuries: direct and indirect. Direct injuries happen when the mouth or head is either struck by or strikes an object. Indirect injuries happen when an open mouth is closed abruptly, forcing the lower jaw’s teeth to be crushed into the upper teeth.

Additionally, there are three types of dental injuries that an auto accident victim can sustain:

Avulsed Tooth

This type of injury occurs when the tooth is completely knocked out of its socket. Once a tooth has been knocked out, it is important to never pick it up by the roots, only by the crown. Immediately, place the tooth in a plastic container filled with whole milk, saliva or saline solution. Once a tooth has been out of the mouth for over two hours, there is a poor chance of survival.

Luxated Tooth

This type of injury occurs when a tooth has been loosened but not completely knocked out. A luxated tooth can move forward, backward and sideways. A luxated tooth is usually treated by simply pushing the tooth back into its original position, but victims are advised to see a dentist for final care.

Fractured Teeth

There are four different types of classifications for tooth fractures, which are differentiated by the number of layers that are involved in the injury. Treatment of a fractured tooth is the same as that of an avulsed tooth.
